How Each Way Betting Works

What is an Each Way Bet?

An each way bet is two separate bets of equal stake — one on the selection to win, and one on it to place (finish in the top 2, 3, 4 or 5 depending on the race). Your total outlay is always double your unit stake.

Place Terms

Place terms are set by the bookmaker and vary by race size. 1/4 odds, 3 places is the most common. This means the place part pays 1/4 of the win odds if the selection finishes in the top 3. Larger fields may offer 1/5 odds or more places.

When Each Way Has Value

Each way bets are best value on longer-priced horses (6/1 and above) where the place odds represent a significant return. On short-priced favourites the place return is minimal and the extra stake rarely justifies it.

Matched Betting Each Way

For matched betting, you lay both the win and place parts separately on the exchange. The place lay odds are found by converting the place terms — for a horse at 8.00 on 1/4 odds, the place odds would be around 2.75 (1 + (8-1) × 0.25).
